Alleviate Pain Associated With An Ingrown Toenail And Promote Healthy Nail Growth

If your large toe on your foot has an ingrown toenail and you are finding it difficult to wear your regular footwear without being in pain, resolve the issue at hand by alleviating pain, trimming the affected nail, and promoting healthy nail growth by following the steps below.

Materials

  • shallow plastic tub
  • epsom salt
  • warm water
  • soft towel
  • foot cream
  • cuticle tool
  • toenail clippers
  • emery board
  • open-toed shoes

Soak Your Foot And Massage The Skin Around The Toe

Fill a shallow plastic tub with warm water. Sprinkle epsom salt into the water and wait for the salt granules to dissolve. Place the basin in front of a chair. Sit down and set your left foot inside of the salt water. Lean back and try to relax as your foot soaks in the tub. The salt water will soften and soothe the skin around the affected toe. Once pain has been drastically reduced or eliminated altogether, remove your foot from the basin.

Use a soft towel to dry your foot and toes. Pour a small amount of foot cream into the palm of one of your hands. Rub your hands together to warm the cream. Gently knead your fingertips around the skin that surrounds the ingrown toenail.

Push Back The Cuticle And Trim The Nail

While seated, lift your foot towards yourself. Inspect the affected toenail. If any skin is close to the toenail and inhibiting it from growing properly, use the tip of a cuticle tool to push the skin away from the nail. Use a pair of nail clippers to trim the edge of the toenail. Cut the nail so that it is straight across the top. Move an emery board back and forth along the top of the nail to eliminate jagged edges.

Wear Shoes That Fit Properly Or Footwear With An Open Toe

Go to a shoe store and try on several styles of shoes that are similar to the ones that you previously wore. If the shoes that you are used to wearing were too tight, the footwear could have contributed to the ingrown toenail. Purchase a pair of shoes that slip on and off and do not place strain near your toes.

Wear open-toed shoes when you are at home relaxing. Otherwise, omit shoes altogether and walk around barefoot while at home. Trim your toenails regularly and pamper your toes on occasion by soaking them in saltwater and applying cream to the skin that surrounds each nail. If your problem persists, you may need more intensive medical ingrown toenails treatment.
